Ignorance is not Bliss for everyone...

You can do something about it

Vincentian Marian Youth is dedicated to service of the poor both locally and nationally. As our program grows and matures we envision VMY in the United States reaching out internationally. When prayerfully preparing for service retreats, VMY seeks to help the poorest people in the areas we travel to. Testimony is given, that as the youth we form encounter and serve the poor their lives are changed… the shock moves from the head to the heart.

One of VMY’s youth participants said this after Operation Overhaul in Pineville, WV...
“I experienced so many things I’ve never seen or done before. I got the opportunity to clean some of the dirtiest houses, paint the most yellow ceiling and see some of the poorest kids I’d ever seen in real life. Every single person we helped during that trip is embedded into my memory and will always serve as a reminder to me of how I should be helping people not only on trips, but in my everyday life.”

Almost half the world

over three billion people

live on less than $2.50 a day.

Number of children worldwide

    2.2 billion

Number in poverty

    1 billion (every second child)

According to UNICEF, 25,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death.”

The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income.

Yes, poverty is a reality in America, just as it is for millions of other human beings on the planet. According to the US Census Bureau, 35.9 million people live below the poverty line in America, including 12.9 million children.

This is despite abundance of food resources. Almost 100 billion pounds of food is wasted in America each year.
